The Story Behind The Rescue
How Happy Whiskers Came to Be
Happy Whiskers Animal Coalition is a foster-based animal rescue serving Broward County and South Florida. Our mission is to reduce pet homelessness and suffering through spay/neuter programs, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and community education.
Founded in 2024 by a compassionate family who relocated from the Northeast, the rescue began after witnessing the overwhelming number of homeless cats struggling to survive on the streets of South Florida. Many rely solely on the kindness of community feeders while facing disease, injury, and the ongoing cycle of overpopulation.
Unlike colder northern states—where winter weather and stricter spay and neuter policies help limit stray populations—Florida’s warm climate allows animals to reproduce year-round, creating a growing challenge for local shelters and rescues.
While Happy Whiskers currently focuses on rescuing and caring for cats and kittens, the organization was founded with a broader vision: building a community-driven coalition that supports animals in need throughout Broward County.
True to our name, we work closely with other rescues, shelters, veterinarians, and volunteers to pool resources, share knowledge, and create practical solutions that save lives. Through partnerships with rescues in the Northeast, we also transport adoptable cats and kittens to regions where demand for pets is higher, helping more animals find loving forever homes.
